How to Dress Up Casual Pieces

Hi there,

Last week, we looked at how to dress down a suit. Today we're going the other direction — taking casual pieces and elevating them enough to work in a business casual environment. Knowing how to dress up casual pieces will expand your wardrobe significantly and become a stylish man will always look appropriate, even in casual items.

The principle here is the same as before. Casual pieces read as casual because of their fabric, cut and the company they keep.

The two most effective tools for dressing up casual pieces are dress shirts and tailored jackets. A dress shirt (even a casual one like an OCBD or a chambray) immediately adds a collar, structure and a degree of formality that a t-shirt or casual shirt simply doesn't have. A sport jacket or blazer does something similar: it frames the body with its lapel and silhouette. They can elevate a very casual foundation and turn it into business casual territory.

Trousers matter here too. Chinos, especially well-cut ones with a higher rise and a clean line, sit much closer to dress trousers. White jeans in a clean, tailored fit behave similarly, they're casual but can be dressed up when worn with the right pieces above. You could even wear them with navy blazers and a tie for a summer business casual outfit.

As for shoes, the choice between sneakers and leather shoes makes a noticeable difference. Clean, minimal sneakers can work in relaxed environments, but a loafer or a casual boot elevates the same outfit another step. If you're uncertain, the leather shoe is almost always the safer call.

This wraps up our three-part series on business casual. We covered what it actually means and how to navigate different office environments, how to dress down a suit, and today, how to dress up casual pieces. The through-line in all three: textures and colors play a big role when dressing for business casual. Understand your clothes, know which direction each garment pulls, and make deliberate choices.

Best regards,
