Understanding Flannel: Suits, Jackets, Trousers

Hi there,

Have you mainly thought flannel means formal grey suits? Today, I'll show you what flannel can do for you besides that.

Flannel's real strength is versatility. Its textured surface sits perfectly between worsted suits (formal, smooth, with sheen) and tweeds (casual, often very rough). This makes it your most wearable autumn, winter, and early spring fabric—appropriate from business to smart casual.

Thanks to the matte texture, it softens formality without losing structure. That makes it easy to wear as separates.

Flannel Jackets

Flannel sports jackets work with casual, textured shirts and trousers. It's a great combination for smart casual and business casual, when you want to look put-together without looking too formal.

Mid-grey, charcoal and navy flannel blazers are equally useful. Solid colors maximize versatility and if you look for even more visual interest, a herringbone would be an excellent choice.

Flannel Suits

Grey and navy remain the foundation for flannel suits, too. The matte texture offers visual interest, and above all, it's very insulating, offering warmth with style. Pair with dress shirts and dark ties for business, or dress down with textured shirts for less formal occasions. And the best part: You can wear the suit jacket and trousers as separates.

Flannel Trousers

The classic "grey flannels"—it's really no exaggeration to call these extremely versatile. They're smarter than chinos but easier to wear with sports jackets than smooth worsted suit trousers. It's a perfect staple for any situation when you want to dress smart without overdoing it.

Pair with navy blazers and oxford cloth button-downs, sports jackets, knitwear, or casual shirts. Grey flannel trousers work with nearly everything in your autumn and winter wardrobe.

What flannel fabric types are available?

I'd like to mention two types: woolen flannel (heavier, more texture) and worsted flannel (usually lighter, smoother). Woolen flannel have more texture and this is really the prefered option to go for, if you want to choose a classic flannel piece. What defines flannel is the milling process that creates the napped surface. For trousers, look for 11-13oz minimum. The matte, napped surface is what makes flannel special.

What other fabric topics confuse you? Reply and let me know—I might cover it in an upcoming newsletter.
